Everything's Peachy

Wow. It's been several days since I've blogged. We're in the home stretch right now in getting Nate ready to leave for his mission. This week we've been busy going through the list to make sure we've taken care of everything. The UPS man delivered the fleece-lined thermals yesterday. That's a relief! Nate has been working on his talk for church. He found out last night he is supposed to speak for 20 to 25 minutes. Fun fun.

Last weekend, we headed up to Brigham City for Peach Days. Nate, Derek and Alex spent their time at the car show, while Mallory and I hung out on Main Street checking out all the displays, sales and arts and crafts booths. I also took Mallory on a little walk down memory lane and showed her the building that used to the hospital...that's where I was born, as well as the house where my mom and I lived when I was a teenager.

As luck would have it, we made it in time to catch a little bit of the Peach Days parade -- including the float carrying the local belly dancers...

I have many fond memories of Peach Days during the years I was growing up. My brother Lance and his friend won many stuffed animals for me at the City of Fun carnival. One year, I won a lovely green glass water pitcher in the dime toss. My mom was thrilled.

And of course, the Peach Queen competition was always a highlight. My senior year in high school, one of the pageant organizers tried to get me to sign up to be a contestant. Obviously they were hard up for competitors that year. I didn't do it. Too bad for me. The contestants all get to ride on the hoods of cool cars in the parade. I've never been very good at the 'parade wave' though.

The last few years, I've entered the Peach Days Literary competition. This year, my essay won first prize! Unfortunately, we had to come home early in the afternoon that day, so I was not able to be there for the awards ceremony to accept my prize But I found out on Monday that I will receive a certificate and $45. Woo hoo! A major award!

Anyway....here are some shots from Peach Days.

Main Street USA

The famous Idle Isle Cafe, where I worked during the summers when I was home from BYU.

These two were enjoying all the festivities. This dog actually waved at us. Very talented. And fashionable in this cool purple sunglasses.

The Post Office Band playing a rousing number for the crowd on the courthouse lawn.

Brigham City's landmark sign over Main Street. Yup, the town where I grew up is famous for being the gateway to the world's greatest wild bird refuge....

The famous Zipper at the City of Fun carnival. Definitely not for the faint of stomach.

Congrats on the contest! How fun! Peach days looks like so much fun. I was thinking about you the other day and wondering when your son was leaving to the MTC. Good luck! (oh and in reference to your comment on my blog- they still whine for candy at 19?! Dang it... I've got a long way to go!) :)

sounds like great memories you had. I hope the next few days before he leaves are filled with peace and love, not rushing and stress.
